Design Engineer (Structural)

Attleborough - Permanent - Full Time

Background

As a Design Engineer you will join a team involved with projects at all stages. A true multidisciplinary contractor design team working on a variety of building and civil engineering projects from £0.1M to £30M+. From education, retail, commercial, industrial, offices, medical and research facilities, to award-winning decarbonisation and residential schemes.

You will provide design and coordination support, peer reviews, and design advice on various building and engineering projects, whilst supporting the contractor with site checking, verification, and validation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production of feasibility, planning and working designs where required in various materials (eg Steel, Concrete, Masonry, Timber).
  • To produce designs, reports and specifications ensuring the compliance with National/International Standards, Statutory requirements, and the project brief.
  • On Engineering led projects, coordinate regular internal project design team reviews/meetings as identified within the Project Management Plan.
  • Determine technical content of drawings, (with reference to any legal requirements of the Building Regulations and other statutory bodies).
  • Decide the format and scope of design data required for project (drawings, schedules, specification, etc.).
  • Translate standard/proprietary manufacturer’s details onto working designs.
  • Produce and check Designers Health and Safety Risk Assessments as required for the project.
  • Ensure the dimensional accuracy and compliance with all relative project drawings.
  • When necessary, visit site and carry out level/measured survey to ensure dimensional compatibility between existing and proposed structures.
  • Undertake project co-ordination (controlling the preparation and timely issue of design data in accordance with QA procedures) and contractor’s programme.

  • In conjunction with the contractor’s staff, establish the most efficient and economic method of construction/use of materials within the technical requirements/constraints.
  • Undertake design appraisals of Employers Requirements documentation to evaluate risk and opportunity for our group clients.
  • Production of engineering designs, calculations etc. to current standards, including but not limited to design using concrete, masonry, steel, timber, foundations, retaining walls, etc.
  • On every project, work closely with other internal and external team members including Engineers/Surveyors to ensure that the design is compliant with both specification and project cost constraints.
  • Monitor/review project fee structure and determine associated variation costs during the project.
  • Preparation and issue of design reports for submission to the contractor, reporting in conjunction with the Project Management Plan.
  • Liaising with the project manager to establish programme and key dates for information issue.
  • Check drawings schedules and specifications for compliance with design requirements and current practice/ standards.
  • Visit site and report on the technical validity, feasibility, or compliance with agreed guidelines of existing, partially complete, or proposed projects.
  • Mentoring of Trainees and Technicians.

Key Skills & Knowledge

  • Working Knowledge of:
  • Prominent structural design guides, codes of practice, and standards (appropriate to discipline)
  • Basic temporary works design
  • General Construction and Engineering design and detailing
  • Client facing communication skills
  • Computer Aided Design Software (AutoCAD, CADs, Tekla, Tedds, Scale etc as appropriate to design discipline)

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years post graduate experience in the UK working across a wide range of construction sectors.
  • Degree in Civil or Civil and Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Working towards Incorporated or Chartered engineer (IEng/CEng) through the IStructE (or with another Professional Engineering Institution). Support and mentoring will be provided.
