The Bob Champion Building

Developed to provide space for teaching, development and research, the Bob Champion Building was delivered in 2015 on behalf of the University of East Anglia in collaboration with Norfolk and Norwich NHS Trust.

Initially working with the developer and client team, we carried out a thorough review of the development site constraints and opportunities leading to the site acquisition by UEA.

Our team developed the initial engineering concept designs to deliver a reinforced concrete structural frame solution utilising efficient flat slab and continuous spanning slab solutions, along with the complex clear-span sawtooth roof construction, and terraced auditorium.  Working alongside Ground Technology Services and our piling specialists GM

Piling, we were able to deliver a cost effective foundation solution using our collective knowledge and experience of the highly variable ground conditions in the area.

Our civil engineering team provided solutions to address the site topography, along with full design specification of laboratory drainage systems in close consultation with key stakeholders to ensure that all segregation, flow monitoring and sampling measures were incorporated into the design.

Utilising our building detail and ‘buildability’ knowledge, we supported the contractor with architectural design management and coordination services, supporting the project architect in the development of the complex detailing required in a number of areas.
