Heltwate SEN School

Carter Design Group provided full Architectural, Structural and Civil Engineering design services alongside RG Carter for the delivery of the Heltwate SEN Jubilee Building new building project, funded by Peterborough City Council.  Heltwate School is a mixed school which caters for pupils aged 5 to 19 with moderate to severe learning difficulties and medical needs.

The stand-alone facility incorporates five classroom spaces, a hall, sensory rooms, therapy rooms, hygiene rooms, outdoor covered play spaces and soft play areas, first floor balconies, and an enclosed walkway and associated external works, drainage, and landscaping improvements.

The building was designed and delivered to achieve BREEAM Excellent, with a hot rolled primary steel frame, with SFS infill panels and feature brickwork/details.

We developed the RIBA Stage 2 design to incorporate substantial value engineering initiatives, whilst mitigating ground risks associated with the local site conditions and former site use and addressing off -site highways improvement needs.

The new building, playing field and outdoor facilities provides much needed special education places for children living in Peterborough.
